Why Does My Booster Pump Start and Stop So Often? Check These 6 Things First

You installed a Booster pump at home to keep water pressure steady, but now the pump makes a noise by itself every so often, and when you use water it starts and stops repeatedly ("cycling"). Besides being noisy, you worry it will wear the pump out. Don't rush to call for repairs—frequent start-stop is usually not the pump itself failing, but one of the situations below. Check them in order and you'll have a clear idea of what's going on.

1. There is an invisible micro leak in the piping
This is the most common cause. When no water is being used, if the toilet tank is slowly seeping, a faucet is dripping, or there is a tiny leak in the piping inside the wall, the line pressure will slowly drop; when it falls to the start pressure, the pump tops it up once—hence "it makes a noise even when no one is using water." How to check: close all faucets tightly and see whether the water meter still turns; put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank and after ten-odd minutes check whether the water in the bowl has changed color.

2. The check valve does not close tightly
If the check valve at the pump outlet is stuck by debris or has aged and no longer closes tightly, the pressure it has built up will slowly flow back and bleed off, so the pump has to restart repeatedly to top up the pressure. This requires dismantling and inspection, which is not recommended as a DIY job—make a note of it and contact after-sales service.

3. Models with a pressure tank: air bladder has lost pressure
Booster pumps with a pressure tank rely on the air bladder inside the tank to stabilize pressure. If the bladder pressure is insufficient or the bladder is damaged, the tank can no longer buffer the pressure, and using a little water drops the pressure to the bottom, so the pump naturally starts and stops frequently. If the water comes out in spurts when you use it, this is most likely the cause.

4. Water use is too small—old pumps can't reach the start flow rate
When you turn the faucet only slightly open to wash your hands, or use just a little water, the flow falls below the start threshold of an old-style flow switch, and the pump cycles: start—stop—start again. This is not a fault; it is a limitation of the control method. Today's variable-frequency constant-pressure pumps and smart Booster pumps handle low flow much better. For example, the smart mode of the burks Family-X Booster pump can start and run stably even at flows below 1.2L/min, greatly reducing frequent cycling; if your old pump really can't cope, consider switching to a variable-frequency model.

5. The inlet filter screen is clogged
When the inlet filter screen is clogged with silt or scale, water intake is restricted and pressure fluctuates, making the pump run unstably. After cutting the power and shutting off the water, check the filter screen at the location given in the manual (at the external port on the pump body—no need to dismantle the pump), rinse it clean and put it back.

6. The panel shows a fault code—note it down first
Variable-frequency Booster pumps have protection functions. If frequent shutdowns are accompanied by a flashing code on the panel, the pump is reporting a fault, such as overvoltage, undervoltage, water shortage or locked rotor. The panel of the burks SMART-ONE, for example, displays the corresponding protection code. Take a photo of the code first and send it to after-sales service—that is the fastest way to diagnose it. Do not repeatedly cut the power and restart to test.

Safety reminder: self-checks are limited to operations that do not involve electricity, such as looking, listening, closing valves and checking the filter screen. For anything involving dismantling the pump, wiring or replacing parts, contact a professional electrician or after-sales service. If you smell burning, see smoke or notice signs of electric leakage, cut the power and stop the pump first, and do not power it up again to test. If you are unsure, send us the pump model and the symptoms and we will help you diagnose it. Consultation hotline: 400-8565-222.
