How to Choose a Basement Sewage Lifting Pump? 5 Key Points for Selection

The most troublesome part of basement renovation is drainage: the locations of the bathroom, laundry room, and bar sink are lower than the municipal sewage pipe, and sewage cannot flow out by gravity, so a sewage lifting pump must be used to "lift" the water up. Many users ask right away how much a unit costs, but choosing the wrong type of lifting pump is more troublesome than buying an expensive one—if it is too small, it cannot discharge fast enough; if it is too large, it wastes energy and is also prone to clogging. After reading the following 5 points, you can first make a rough estimate yourself.

1. First count how many drainage points there are
First list all the equipment that needs drainage: toilet, shower, washbasin, washing machine, air conditioner condensate water, bar sink—count every one. For a single bathroom with few drainage points and low water consumption, a compact model is enough, such as the burks B-Lift28L, which is suitable for pumping sewage from shower rooms and washbasins, and can also transport sewage containing toilet paper and feces produced by toilets. If there are many drainage points and water use is concentrated, choose one size larger.

2. Whether there is a toilet determines the pump type
This is the point most likely to be chosen incorrectly. Draining only gray water such as from showers and washing machines is completely different from draining toilet fecal sewage in terms of pump requirements. For occasions with toilets, choose models that can handle feces and toilet paper, or cutting-type or large-passage models; for gray water only, an ordinary vortex type is sufficient. When selecting, be sure to clarify "whether there is a toilet."

3. Calculate the head sufficiently: vertical height + horizontal distance
Head is not just about how deep the basement is. From the pump installation position to the municipal sewage pipe connection point, add the vertical lift of several meters plus the length of the horizontal pipe—as a rule of thumb, 10 meters horizontal is roughly equivalent to a loss of 1 meter of head, and the more elbows, the greater the loss. If the head is underestimated, the water cannot be pumped up and may even flow back; if unsure, report the vertical height and approximate pipe length to an engineer for calculation—do not guess.

4. Consider the usage scenario: single pump for household use, dual pumps preferred for commercial use
Household basement water use is intermittent, so a single-pump model is fully sufficient: for example, the B-Lift55L is suitable for domestic sewage from basement bathrooms, laundry rooms, bar sinks, etc.; for villa basements with many drainage points, consider the B-Lift80L. However, for places such as hotels, restaurants, clubs, and commercial complexes where water use is continuous and downtime is costly, dual-pump models are recommended, such as the B-Lift100L dual-pump station, where two pumps alternate operation and one can take over when the other is under maintenance; for places with large flow and continuous drainage, larger-capacity pump stations such as the BN-Lift130L/300L and B-Lift450L are also available.

5. Reserve the installation location in advance
The lifting pump should be installed close to the drainage points, with power supply and a sewage riser nearby; an external lifting unit does not require opening the tank to contact sewage during maintenance, making later maintenance convenient. This should be communicated to the construction party during renovation, leaving maintenance space in the equipment room or bathroom corner.

Finally, a reminder: the above is a general approach to selection; the specific model should be confirmed by an engineer based on your home’s drainage points, pipe routing, and water consumption.
