A healthy sewage lifting station has a calm rhythm: the level rises, the pump empties the tank, and it rests until the next inflow. If yours starts every few minutes — or never quite settles — the pump is usually not the culprit. Per the burks B-Lift manual's troubleshooting section, rapid start-stop cycling comes from a short list of causes.

1. The check valve has failed, is blocked, or was never fitted. After the pump stops, water in the discharge pipe flows back into the tank, the level rises again, and the station restarts — an endless pump-it-out, flow-it-back loop. Listen just after a stop: a clear rush of returning water is the tell-tale sign. The check valve is part of the pump pipework; have it serviced or replaced by the dealer rather than opening the unit yourself.
2. The float switch is fouled or faulty. Debris wrapped around the float, or solids lodged beneath it, produce false level signals. Switch the power off first, then clean only the debris around the float from the inspection opening — no dismantling. If cycling continues after cleaning, the float switch itself is likely defective; that is a dealer repair.
3. Thermal overload protection is tripping. Frequent starts overheat the motor; the protector cuts out, cools, resets, and the station appears to stop and restart "by itself". Treat this as a symptom: find the backflow or float problem causing the cycling instead of repeatedly re-powering the unit.
Two related symptoms from the same manual page: if the station runs but never stops, suspect debris under the float or a float-switch fault. If it runs but delivers little or no water, the listed causes are debris at the inlet, a blocked discharge pipe, low supply voltage (a qualified electrician's job to check), a damaged impeller, or an air lock — make sure the vent hole in the discharge pipe is unobstructed.
Safe order of work: observe one full cycle and listen for backflow; switch off the power; clear debris around the float; power back on and watch a full usage cycle. Still cycling? Note the start interval, any return-water sound and any alarm state, and send those details to your dealer or to us — a station left short-cycling wears its motor out quickly.
