What to Do When a Sewage Lifting Pump Won't Start or Keeps Running

You flush the basement bathroom, but the sewage lifting pump doesn't make a sound; or the water has clearly been drained, yet the unit keeps running and won't stop. Both situations are frustrating, but that is exactly when you should not start taking things apart. First work out whether it completely fails to start or starts but won't stop, then troubleshoot in a safe order — it will be much more efficient.

1. Cut the power first, then troubleshoot

Before doing anything, switch off the main power and unplug the unit, and make sure there is no standing water underfoot — do not operate it while standing in water. If you smell burning, see smoke, or notice signs of electrical leakage, keep the power off immediately and do not power it up again to test. The motor and control section of this equipment are live during operation, and checking fuses, circuits and wiring must be done by a qualified electrician. Ordinary users should not open the control box to touch wiring, let alone disassemble the pump body.

2. Completely fails to start: check the power supply and float switch first

When a sewage lifting pump won't start, the common causes listed in the manual include low voltage, a blown fuse, a broken circuit, and a float switch affected by debris. There are only three things a user can safely do: first, check whether the socket and control box indicators are normal and whether other appliances in the home are also affected, to determine whether it is a power outage or a tripped breaker — if the breaker trips repeatedly, do not keep resetting it; second, confirm whether the water level in the tank has reached the start position — when the level is too low, the unit not starting is normal; third, with the power off, visually check from the outside whether there is obvious toilet paper or debris tangled around the float's movement area. If you can clear external debris without opening the cover or reaching into the tank, do so gently; anything that requires opening the cover should be left alone. As for internal causes such as a jammed impeller or a short circuit in the motor or wiring, these cannot be seen from outside and must not be checked by disassembly yourself — contact after-sales service to diagnose them.

3. Keeps running and won't stop: usually the water level won't drop or the float is held up

If the unit keeps running after draining, first shut off the incoming water and cut the power to prevent the motor from running dry for a long time and overheating. Then consider two questions: first, is water continuously flowing in — for example, a leaking toilet cistern that keeps refilling, or a tap not fully closed — so water keeps entering the tank and the level naturally cannot drop; second, is there debris under or around the float holding it at the high position, making the control system think the water level is still high. The manual's guidance on a pump that won't stop also centers on these two points: debris around the float, or a faulty float switch itself. The former can be carefully cleared with the power off and within what is externally visible; the latter is a switch fault — do not replace parts yourself, contact after-sales service. If frequent starting and stopping, slower drainage or backflow also occur, it may be related to the check valve and piping condition; these situations likewise require a professional to disassemble and confirm, and users should not take the piping apart themselves.

4. In these situations, go straight to a qualified electrician or after-sales service

Repeated breaker trips, a noticeably hot motor, a burning smell, water leakage from the unit, still not starting or still not stopping after clearing external debris, or continuous alarms from the control box — if any one of these applies, do not keep powering it up to test. Note down the model, whether it is a single or dual pump, whether the fault occurred after flushing or after washing machine drainage, and what the control box indicates. The more specific your description, the faster after-sales service can diagnose it. Note that this equipment may still be hot inside after the power is cut, so do not touch the pump body immediately after shutdown — let it cool before a professional handles it.

If you have checked in the order above and still cannot find the cause, contact us through the contact details on the website or via online customer service, giving the model and the symptoms, and we will help you decide whether to keep observing or arrange after-sales service.

To learn about the differences between models of different capacities, take a look at our sewage lifting pumps first, then compare with the number of drainage points in your home.
